Doug provides a multi-disciplinary set of competencies and professional experience spanning hospitality operating companies, lodging + food & beverage focused family offices, commercial real estate investment & capitalization, distressed debt situations, and complex joint venture structures. Doug has extensive cross-sector experience having served as CFO/CIO & General Counsel for Plan Do See a global diversified hospitality owner/operator, structured finance banker/debt trader at Citadel Investment Group, hospitality sector & capital markets advisor at ARHospitality Capital (ARH), commercial real estate banker at Credit Suisse and as a real estate finance attorney with global law firms Sidley Austin LLP and SquirePattonBoggs LLP and presently as Managing Partner of Aberdeen Law Group LLP. Throughout each role, Doug’s primary focus was serving clients in the hospitality sector with respect to finance, investment and legal advisory services.
Plan Do See, a global Japanese hospitality company controlled by a single family office, engaged ARH in 2013 to advise on it co-venturing in a NYC hotel development project. In 2014, Plan Do See recruited Doug to the newly created position of CIO/CFO and General Counsel, joining two other executives to develop and execute a significant hospitality focused expansion plan in all markets beyond its established operations in Japan and the Pacific Rim. In the first 18 months leading this effort, Doug was involved in originating, structuring and closing direct investments and co-ventures in each of the targeted markets including NYC, Washington D.C., Miami, Chicago, Los Angeles, Sonoma, and Honolulu. Concurrent with expanding into these new markets, Doug was instrumental in creating and building out Plan Do See America’s hospitality investment & operating platform: including developing its OpCo /PropCo structure, implementing investment criteria & strategy, capital relationships, financial reporting and controls systems and procedures, insurance and risk management programs, business intelligence systems, and oversight of development projects.
Doug also has extensive capital markets experience in the hospitality and commercial real estate sector. At Credit Suisse, Doug led the origination and closing of over $1.2 billion and was integrally involved in over $3 billion in financing at all levels of the capital structure for projects and acquisitions across all asset classes, with a specific focus on the lodging sector nationally. At Citadel Investment Group, Doug was Managing Director and Co-Head of Real Estate Finance Strategies and led Citadel’s entry into commercial real estate finance, developing a lending platform with $1B in balance sheet capacity while also advising other internal divisions on specialty finance company balance sheet nonperforming asset resolution engagements, including structuring and executing secondary market trades of senior and mezzanine loan obligations. Notably, Doug was featured in a February 2012 Wall Street Journal article discussing ARH being appointed as Directing Holder and sole advisor to a foreign fund on its acquisition of a B-Note and subsequent FMV option exercise on a $150M A-Note out of a floating rate CMBS trust and successful resolution of the inter-creditor battle over the debt on a notable Las Vegas casino and resort property.
